Between 1839 and 1847, Liszt enthusiastically discovered gypsy music, which he saw as an expression of Hungarian genius, and set about composing a huge cycle that was only completed in 1885. Although he lacked the scientific arsenal of an "ethnomusicology" still unknown in his day, he left us authentic masterpieces of incomparable inventiveness. The popularity of these Hungarian Rhapsodies has never faded in our concert halls, and quite rightly so, with audiences surrendering to their wild virtuosity, melodic verve and unstoppable expressive sincerity. Viscerally attached to these scores, of which he is one of the great interpreters, Denis Pascal resolutely turns his back on any literal folklore: while preserving the rhythmic vigor or even the roughness of these rhapsodies, he masterfully reminds us that they are landscapes as poetic as they are dreamy, paying careful attention to the construction and colors of the Lisztian piano.
