Oscar Peterson, a quiet, serene virtuoso, was no doubt the most brilliant pianist of his generation. Throughout his life, which he devoted entirely to the instrument he spent up to fourteen hours a day playing, he managed to find his own way to build bridges between classical music and jazz. Without forcing himself, calling instead on a rare integrity, open-mindedness and sophistication, he attained a level of skill which brought him universal praise. This allowed him to write a memorable chapter in the history of contemporary jazz, of which he remains one of the most talented pianists. |
