Chet Baker suffered from comparisons throughout his career, notably with Miles Davis, whose sound was very like his own. His skin colour was also a disadvantage; a sort of racism in reverse. Once he had left his (at least apparently) carefree youth behind, Chet drew his material from the tragedy of his own existence. He found in it as it were a soul's breath and it was only through his voice and his playing that he was able to address the painful secret which would remain forever a mystery. |
