A few months after leaving Salzburg, Mozart decided to compose a mass of thanksgiving for the recovery from illness of his fiancée Constanze Weber. Though it remained unfinished because of his activities in Vienna, the Mass in C minor has taken its place as one of the masterpieces of his sacred music, on the same level as the ill-fated Requiem. Preceded by the little-known Meistermusik for male chorus and orchestra, this masterly interpretation conducted by Philippe Herreweghe in 1991 is now regarded as a benchmark.
