The piano was not the only instrument for which Franz Liszt created virtuoso works. He was just as significant as the protagonist of a new kind of organ music. The organ was rediscovered as a concert instrument in the nineteenth century; freed from the shackles of liturgical obligations, it reached a new, symphonic fullness of sound. Liszt often uses sacred chorales in his compositions, yet develops concert pieces out of them that are as profound as they are multifaceted. Helmut Deutsch makes an impressive listening experience out of these compositions. Winner of the Franz Liszt Competition in Budapest, he presents a selection of magnificent works by this composer with brilliance and expressive strength. |
