"In mid-2013, whilst touring my last record, I started compiling a list of songs. Songs that would form the basis of my new record. I'd played a handful of big band shows over the last year, and the response was always staggering. I loved the huge 'brassy' sound and the world of potentials you get as an arranger. It was settled: my next album would be for big band. So almost every night for 4 months I'd re-write this list. Slowly changing it. Switching and shuffling the songs and adding new ones. I settled on a mix of standards, covers and some originals. Similar in approach to 'Stepping Out', but this time, I wanted more "POW!" to the sound and I wanted to stretch out more as an arranger and as a singer. I started work on the arrangements and buried myself in music for a week - by the end of it, I had 600+ pages of big band music ready to be recorded. Working with some of the world's finest musicians, including; Seb De Krom (Jamie Cullum), Nigel Hitchcock (Ray Charles), Tom Farmer (Empirical) and a horn section made from some of London's finest - I had a blast making this record. The task of recording went to Curtis Schwartz (Stacey Kent) who produced this album with me and it's his beautiful Steinway D you can hear on the very last track... It's been an incredible journey, and two years later, "that list", has turned into a completed album. I'm very proud of "On A Clear Day" - it's the album I've always wanted to make.
