Louis Armstrong was the first to bring jazz out of its ghetto as the expression of a community and make it a universal language understood by all. In this, he was musician, musicologist, pioneer, prophet and pilgrim rolled into one. But he was, above all, a human being able to take the message of jazz out into the world with an infectious good humour and a friendly and benevolent warmth - which should not however be mistaken for naivety. On the contrary, Satchmo had probably understood perfectly the sort of world he was in and his legendary good nature was simply a ruse, a subtle way of captivating people, his Trojan horse."
