"If any musician deserves to be called the « King of Jazz », it is Louis Armstrong. His immensely powerful gift made his music resonate world-wide. There is not a single jazzman who would dream of questioning the aura and the impact of this jovial improviser, nor one who would not acknowledge his genius. And none would deny that he is the one through and thanks to whom this music, born in the heart of the Afro-American soul, came to be universally recognised as an art form. Louis Armstrong was the first to bring jazz out of its ghetto as the expression of a community and make it a universal language understood by all. In this, he was musician, musicologist, pioneer, prophet and pilgrim rolled into one. But he was, above all, a human being able to take the message of jazz out into the world with an infectious good humour and a friendly and benevolent warmth - which should not however be mistaken for naivety. On the contrary, Satchmo had probably understood perfectly the sort of world he was in and his legendary good nature was simply a ruse, a subtle way of captivating people, his Trojan horse."
