As is the case with most of Schubert’s chamber music, it took several decades for the quintet to be discovered and published. The first performance took place more than 20 years after the composer’s death, on the initiative of the violinist Joseph Hellmesberger and his quartet (Vienna, Musikverein, 1850), and the score was published only in 1853 (Spina, Vienna). The work then circulated rapidly through Europe; for example, it received its Paris premiere on 7 February 1866 under the auspices of the Société de Musique de Chambre of Jules Armingaud and Léon Jacquard. Here Anne Gastinel joins the Quatuor Diotima in Schubert's monumental chamber work that takes almost an hour to perform but contains some of his most sublime melodies.
