Initially a solo pianist, Count Basie performed alone in various night clubs and cinemas and accompanied various singers before finding fulfillment as the leader of one of the most important big bands in history. A virtuoso stride pianist, in time he moved away from this style which attributed a predominant role to the left hand and developed a fiery brand of swing underpinned by his technique in which the left hand played more and more discretely, almost fading out altogether.
