"A tireless globetrotter, Lionel Hampton set stages all around the world on fire with his unfailing energy and magnanimity. A highly skilled, sometimes even excessive, improviser he managed to keep the swing tradition alive throughout the turmoil caused by be-bop and then by free jazz. He helped develop the use of drums but, more importantly, he was behind the introduction of the vibraphone to jazz bands."
