Shostakovich (1906-1975) composed two keyboard trios, respectively in 1923 and 1944. The two works diametrically opposed in almost all points of view.

The first keyboard trio (op 8) is a true work of youth (Shostakovich was only 17 years old!), Impregnated with the romanticism and passion of the first great love story of the composer. We find little of this romantic impulse in the Second Keyboard Trio (Op. 67), born of war rather than of love. That he was able to compare the opening measures of the two works in order to grasp the contrast: the full sound of the cello of the first gives way to an extraordinarily fragile, barely audible introduction, uttered by the cello in harmonics. The two Prokofiev plays interpreted here correspond more closely to the first trio of Shostakovich.
