This is the third and final disc in Winchester Cathedral's survey of Stanford's sacred choral music. Several favourites here, including the dramatic For lo, I raise up and the grand hymn St Patrick's Breastplate.
Also included are some less well known works. Lighten our darkness, written in Windsor during an air-raid in 1918, here receives its first recording; the edition has been prepared specially for Winchester Cathedral Choir by DrJeremy Dibble. The Latin Magnificat was also composed in 1918, almost as a 'sorry' note for a falling-out Stanford had had with Hubert Parry shortly before the latter's death; the score is inscribed: 'This work, which death prevented me from giving Charles Hubert Hastings Parry in life, I dedicate to his name in grief. C.V.S.'
