To combine folk music's richness of colour with the artistic demands of the concert hall - this was attempted by many composers during the course of the 19th and 20th centuries, with more or less success. Joaquin Turina, Hermann Zilcher and Antonín Dvorák succeeded in convincingly integrating folk elements into their works. The traditional melodies and rhythms of their very different cultures are not merely inserted as decorative folklore but expand the compositional possibilities as additional basic material. Thus, they open up new perspectives for traditional ensembles such as the piano trio, which the Turina Trio realise here with great performing delight. |
