Opera was an essential element in the reigns of Joseph I (1750-1777) and Maria I (1777-1816) of Portugal. Even after the collapse of the Ópera do Tejo in the disastrous earthquake of 1755 it continued to flourish. This is the first recording of works by the Portuguese composer Jerónimo Francisco de Lima. It offers a selection of symphonies and arias featuring German soprano Monika Mauch, Ensemble Concentus Peninsulae and Portuguese conductor Vasco Negreiros and brings to life a forgotten operatic pioneer. |
