Czech composer. He studied with Shebalin at the Moscow Conservatory (1951-6), then worked in Prague for the radio and the composers' union. Contact with Western music in the mid-1960s took him from socialist realism to an avant-garde style, often using electronics (e.g. Invariant, 1969).
