The marimba is originally from South-East Africa. Import-ed in South America by the African slaves, the instrument kept its name and developed in Central America and in the Caribbean before it reappeared in 1910 in the Ameri-can bands, in a modern way. In 1935, the virtuoso Clair Omar Musser gave a memorable concert at Carnegie Hall, New York and, after World War Two, it was largely used by the Western composers, such as Milhaud, Orff or Mes-siaen. The marimba is one colorful, lyrical, powerful and intimate instrument, with a large ambitus, and it suits to many musical climates.

The French Trio SR9 promotes a creative vision of con-temporary western drumming. Their special way of re-viewing and transcribing the works of the great compos-ers shows how actively they commit to classical and con-temporary musical heritage. It led them to study closely the complete works of Johann Sebastian Bach and they worked on a specific part of it. The Trio SR9 was created in 2010 at the National Conservatory of Music and Dance of Lyon. In the past five years, they appeared on many stages and at large number of festivals, in France and abroad. In 2012, they won three prizes at the Internation-al Music Competition in Luxembourg.

The Trio SR9’s tribute to Bach is about this fascinating and mysterious Canon than reflects the very quintessence of his art. The musicians transcribed the selected works for one, two or three marimbas and they illustrate the large variety of his instrumental music. They also honor the art of transcription that Bach practiced all his life as a demonstration of his great interest in other instruments with different timbers.
