This recording is another in a series of CDs dedicated to the works of Eduard and Richard
Franck. Both Eduard Franck and his son Richard were renowned pianists and highly thought of
as composers, but already during their lives received little recognition and fell into oblivion after
their deaths. They were rediscovered with the resurgence of interest in 19th- and early 20th-century
music, and the composers who were influenced by the “great masters” of that time.
Thomas Blees
has performed more than 30 compositions for cello and orchestra at numerous concerts at home
and abroad.
Apart from the standard works, he has also considerably enlarged the classical-romantic
repertoire, rediscovering and performing pieces which until then had been forgotten. Examples
are the first editions of Luigi Boccherini's Cello Concerto in D major, GV 476 (Edition Peters)
and Julius Weismann's Sonatina Concertante Op. 137 (Edition Gravis).
In addition to his large discography, he has recorded nearly 100 pieces for cello and piano and
for solo cello for various European broadcasting companies.
Remarking especially the richness and warmth of his flawless tone, the press praises Thomas Blees
as a soloist of high quality.
Roswitha Gediga
is a professor at the Cologne Academy of Music. Her partnership with Thomas Blees goes back
many years to when they were fellow students in Cologne.
