The 1812 Overture, Telarc's all-time best-selling recording, is an audiophile's dream. The superb playing of the Cincinnati Pops under the baton of Erich Kunzel, combined with Telarc's sound effects make this title an unbeatable performance! The bells heard on this CD are those of the Emery Memorial Carillon, recreating the tumultuous clangor of church bells which Tchaikovsky envisioned. In order to capture the most authentic recording, three nineteenth-century cannons, owned and manned by the Fifth Virginia Regiment, were utilized, and to capture the perfect cannon sound, a total of twenty-four different charges with sixteen shots of varying sizes were exploded and recorded, as required in Tchaikovsky's score. The reissue of this highly collectible title is being mastered on the same lathe that was used to cut the original legendary LP and will mark the first US pressing since 1981. Featuring the superb musical performance by the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, the use of original 19th century cannons (for true authenticity), and Telarc's amazing sound quality this album quickly became a musical sensation, one of the most in-demand demonstration disc ever recorded, as well as a highly sought-after collector's item. The original pressing went on to become the highest selling album in Telarc history, moving over 800,000 copies since its original vinyl release in 1981. This LP is being cut, as are all the others, by Eric Boulanger on Stan Ricker's (who cut the original master) own equipment (with some slight modifications) which Boulanger bought from Ricker's estate after his death. The dynamic range of this recording presented challenges to Boulanger in keeping the sound as fully dynamic as the original while keeping the sound as close to the original as possible.
