The new album by Ensemble Gilles Binchois is dedicated to the works of its founder and director, Dominique Vellard. In Cantar del alma, he interweaves his own compositions – mostly vocal – with his arrangements of traditional music, drawn largely from the rich heritage of the Mediterranean basin. He is joined by Eva Zaicik, the Quatuor Debussy, Ourania Lampropoulou on santouri, and Xenia Maliarevitch on piano.
These two facets reveal the artistic identity of a composer shaped by his deep engagement with medieval and Renaissance repertoires, folk and world music, as well as the legacy of Faure, Berio, Bartok, and de Falla. Amid this convergence of musical worlds, the voice emerges as a unifying thread in Vellard's clear, balanced, and refined writing – one that stands distinctly apart from much of today's contemporary music.
