"Gulda was an unusual personality, a humanist pianist, with an unconditional love of Mozart and jazz. His prodigious virtuosity was deliberately hidden by a refined Viennese and often melancholy mood, which gave some autumn colour to now celebrated scores. This programme demonstrates a true classical stylist. Recording Date December 31, 1957 Gulda gave his Carnegie Hall debut at the age of 20, and was soon regarded as one of the most important interpreters of the postwar period, playing his groundbreaking interpretation of the complete Beethoven sonatas. His piano students include Martha Argerich, who called Gulda ""my most important influence,"" and the famous conductor Claudio Abbado (1933-2014)."
